Open-Face Chinese Poker traces its roots back to traditional Chinese poker, which was played with 13 cards dealt to each player. However, the modern version that has gained widespread recognition was popularized in the mid-2000s and is often attributed to Alex "Kilgore" Pineiro. The game's distinguishing feature is that players construct three separate hands – a top, middle, and bottom hand – using a total of 13 cards. The top hand contains just three cards, while the middle and bottom hands have five cards each.

Open-face Chinese poker is a popular variant of traditional Chinese poker that is typically played online. The game is played between 2 to 4 players, and the goal is to create three poker hands from 13 cards dealt to each player. Here are the basic rules to play online Open-face Chinese poker.

1- Setup:

  • The game is played with a standard 52-card deck without jokers.
  • Each player is dealt 13 cards to start the game.

Players must arrange their cards into three hands: the "front" hand with 3 cards, the "middle" hand with 5 cards, and the "back" hand with 5 cards. The front hand must be the weakest, the middle hand stronger than the front, and the backhand the strongest.

2- Scoring:

  • Each hand is scored individually against the corresponding hands of opponents.
  • The goal is to have higher-ranking hands in all three positions compared to your opponents.
  • If you have better hands in all three positions, you receive points from each opponent. If not, you pay points to each opponent.

3- Setting Hands:

  • Once all players have arranged their hands, players take turns placing their cards face-up on the corresponding positions on the board.
  • After the initial deal, players must set their hands consecutively, starting with the player to the left of the dealer and proceeding clockwise.

4- Illegal Hands and Fouls:

  • Hands must be set according to standard poker hand rankings (e.g., high card, pair, two pair, etc.).
  • The front hand must be the weakest hand, the middle stronger, and the back the strongest.
  • If a player sets their hands out of order (e.g., stronger hand in the front compared to the middle), they "foul" and lose the hand, paying a penalty to all opponents.
  • Fouling results in losing points and often also additional penalties, such as royalties.

5- Royalties:

  • Royalties are special combinations that grant extra points if present in your hand. They are not compared against opponents but are awarded independently.
  • Common royalties include things like straight flushes, four-of-a-kind, full houses, etc.

6- Scoring:

  • Scoring can be done using a point system where certain hands are worth certain points, or it can be done using a monetary system.
  • The exact scoring rules may vary, so it's essential to agree on the scoring system before starting the game.

The gameplay of OFCP is as intriguing as it is different from traditional poker. Each player starts with five cards face up, followed by a sequence of card additions in turns. The catch lies in the fact that once a card is placed, it cannot be moved. The game's strategic element is rooted in the art of building strong hands while considering the card combinations in the other hands.

A crucial aspect of OFCP is the concept of "setting" hands. The top hand must be the weakest, followed by the middle hand, and finally, the bottom hand, which must be the strongest. Violating this order results in a "foul," causing the player to forfeit the round.

Scoring in OFCP involves awarding points based on the strength of each hand combination. Traditional poker hand rankings apply here but with variations. For instance, a flush in the middle hand outranks a full house in the bottom hand. Points are tallied at the end of each round based on a predetermined scoring system, with players earning or losing points based on the outcome of their hands.

Furthermore, OFCP offers a unique bonus system, where specific hand combinations trigger bonus points. For example, a player who completes a hand with a "royalty" (a specific hand rank like a flush or better) in the top hand earns bonus points. This adds an extra layer of excitement and strategy to the game.
