A Brief History of 3 Card Poker

Before diving into the rules and gameplay of 3 Card Poker, let's take a moment to explore the origins of this exciting casino game. Unlike other classic casino games that have a long history dating back centuries, 3 Card Poker is a relatively new invention. It was created in 1994 by British inventor Derek Webb. Webb wanted to develop a fast-paced poker game that could be played against the dealer, incorporating elements of poker into a simplified format.

After facing initial resistance in the UK due to gambling restrictions, Webb decided to introduce the game to American casinos. In 1997, the Grand Casino Gulfport in Mississippi became the first casino to host 3 Card Poker. The game quickly gained popularity among players and other casinos followed suit, leading to its widespread adoption in the gambling industry.

Objective of 3 Card Poker

The objective of 3 Card Poker is simple: beat the dealer's hand by forming a stronger hand using your three cards. Unlike traditional poker games where players compete against each other, in 3 Card Poker, the players go head-to-head against the dealer. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck, and the value of each card is determined by its rank, ranging from 2 (the lowest) to Ace (the highest).

Setup and Hand Rankings

To start a game of 3 Card Poker, each player places an ante bet. The dealer then distributes three cards face-down to each player and themselves. The dealer reveals one of their cards, while the players are not allowed to reveal their cards to each other. Once the cards are dealt, it's time to determine the hand rankings.

In 3 Card Poker, the hand rankings differ from traditional poker games. The highest-ranking hand is a Straight Flush, which consists of three cards of the same suit in consecutive order, such as Ace, King, and Queen of Hearts. Next is the Three of a Kind, which is three cards of the same rank, like three Jacks. A Straight is a hand with three cards in consecutive order, regardless of their suit. A Flush is three cards of the same suit that are not in consecutive order. The lowest-ranking hand is a High Card, which is a hand that doesn't fit into any of the previous categories.

Gameplay and Betting Options

Once the hand rankings are determined, players have two betting options: Play or Fold. If a player decides to Fold, they forfeit their ante bet and exit the game. If a player chooses to Play, they must place a second bet equal to their ante bet. After all players have made their decisions, the dealer reveals their remaining two cards.

To qualify, the dealer must have a hand containing at least a Queen high. If the dealer's hand does not qualify, the players win even money on their ante bets, and their Play bets are returned as a push. If the dealer's hand does qualify, the player's and dealer's hands are compared, and the stronger hand wins. If the player has a stronger hand, they win even money on both their ante and play bets. If the dealer has a stronger hand, the player loses both their bets.
